VIENNA PHILHARMONIC & CHRISTIAN THIELEMANN

Since its founding in 1942, the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has been a byword for exquisite orchestral sound – it is a legendary institution whose musical culture has faithful fans the world over. During its guest appearance at the Kulturpalast, Christian Thielemann, a specialist for 19th-century repertoire, leads the world-class orchestra – an ideal cast for a programme uniting the first symphonies by Schumann and Bruckner. Robert Schumann, just happily married to his Clara, composed his »Spring Symphony« in only a few days, entrusting all his happiness to the music, which seems light-footed and life-affirming. Bruckner’s Symphony in C minor was written when he was still an employee at Linz Cathedral, and it is a work of elementary, and occasionally overwhelming, strength. This concert will feature the second version of the symphony, revised more than twenty years later by the composer, in which youthful exuberance was tempered by the mature symphonic composer.
