OPENING CONCERT

ROYAL CONCERTGEBOUW ORCHESTRA & KLAUS MÄKELÄ

Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra
Klaus Mäkelä

On the opening night of the 2024 Dresdner Musikfestspiele, the Royal Concertgebowu Orchestra and its designated chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä celebrate Anton Bruckner’s 200th birthday. The charismatic young Finn and the venerable Dutch orchestra, founded in 1888, dedicate themselves to the Fifth Symphony by the great late romantic, a composition which is as monumental as it is deeply personal. The composer was never able to hear its orchestral version, as his health prevented him from attending the 1894 world premiere. Today, it is considered one of Bruckner’s most impressive creations, especially because of its contrapuntal and overwhelmingly impressive final movement.
