CLASSICAL BEATS

MAMMAL HANDS

Mammal Hands are among the most successful formations on the jazz scene today. When the saxophone player Jordan Smart and his brother, the pianist Nick Smart, met the drummer Jesse Barrett in 2012, all three of them were busking on the streets of remote Norwich in the east of England. The trio with the unusual name quickly forged a path for itself far from the mainstream, and today it looks back on five successful studio albums. Its programmes are marked by an independent sound, fed by spiritual jazz, Electronica, Eastern European and Irish folk, Indian and African music as well as the Minimal Music of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. The three musicians, who have reached a point »where playing and writing together sometimes feels like a form of telepathy«, will now enchant Dresden’s audience with the hypnotic draw of their music.
