NORDSTAD — DRESDNER FESTSPIELORCHESTER — MINKOWSKI
With the Frenchman Marc Minkowski, the Dresdner Festspielorchester welcomes one of the leading conductors of our times, who founded the Early-Music specialist ensemble Les Musiciens du Louvre at the age of nineteen and is considered a pioneer of historically informed performance practice. The first half of the concert juxtaposes Offenbach and Wagner, two composers who were fairly irreconcilable during their lifetimes. Excerpts from Offenbach’s near-forgotten grand romantic opera »Die Rheinnixen« (The Rhine Mermaids) are followed by Wagner’s »Wesendonck-Lieder«, an expression of the composer’s passion for Mathilde Wesendonck. The young Norwegian mezzo-soprano Astrid Nordstad, who has been conquering European opera and concert stages since winning the »Tom Wilhelmsen Opera Prize« in 2022, is an ideal artist to unlock these emotional sound-worlds. The evening closes with Mendelssohn’s famous Third Symphony, which was inspired by a journey to Scotland.
