JOSEPH HAYDN: »DIE JAHRESZEITEN«

Jordi Savall

Having won the Dresden audience over last festival season with Beethoven’s »Missa solemnis«, Jordi Savall, that exceptional musician and visionary of historically informed performance practice, and his ensembles – La Capella Nacional de Catalunya and Le Concert des Nations – return to the festival with another key work of the classical period, which they perform at the Kulturpalast: Joseph Haydn’s »Die Jahreszeiten« (The Seasons). In this oratorio, in four parts to reflect the cycle of seasons, Haydn depicts human life within the natural world, drawing upon rich onomatopoetic powers of description. Even while recycling formal elements from the work’s predecessor, »The Creation«, Haydn, a protagonist of the First Viennese School, used a refreshingly creative tonal idiom in this late work. The sonic transparency and colourful expressivity for which Savall’s recording of »The Creation« was acclaimed will also be present in every note of the performance of »The Seasons«.
