Jordi Savall

For more than fifty years, Savall has been introducing the world to musical wonders, rescuing them from the darkness of indifference and oblivion. He dedicates himself to the exploration of ancient music, analyzing and interpreting it with his viola da gamba or as a conductor. Through his concerts, as well as his role as an educator, researcher, and initiator of cultural projects, he has significantly contributed to a new perspective and acceptance of ancient music. Together with Montserrat Figueras, Savall founded the ensembles Hespèrion XXI (1974), La Capella Reial de Catalunya (1987), and Le Concert des Nations (1989). With them, he has been exploring and creating a universe full of emotion and beauty for millions of lovers of ancient music around the world.

Through his intense concert activity, extensive discography, and the record label ALIA VOX founded with Montserrat Figueras, Savall has proven that ancient music doesn't have to be elitist and that it can appeal to an even broader audience of all ages. Savall has released more than 230 albums – featuring music from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to compositions of the Baroque and Classical periods, with a particular emphasis on Iberian and Mediterranean traditions. His CDs have received awards such as the »Midem Classical Award«, the »International Classical Music Award«, and the »Grammy«. Between 2020 and 2021, the orchestra Le Concert des Nations, under Savall's musical direction, interpreted all of Beethoven's symphonies, resulting in two albums. The second album was awarded the »Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik« for the best orchestral recording.

In 2008, Savall was appointed »Ambassador for Cultural Dialogue« by the European Union, and together with Montserrat Figueras, he was named »Artist for Peace« under the UNESCO program »Ambassadors of Goodwill«. His work has been honored with the highest national and international awards, including the title of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Universities of Évora (Portugal), Barcelona (Catalonia), Leuven (Belgium), Basel (Switzerland), and Utrecht (Netherlands). France awarded him the title of »Chevalier dans l'Ordre national de la Légion d'honneur«, and in 2012, Savall's life's work was honored with the prestigious Danish »Léonie Sonning
