In 1874, the king of Italian opera, Giuseppe Verdi, composed a Requiem, thereby embarking upon unfamiliar territory. His »Messa da Requiem« is impressive: without denying its borrowing from musical drama, it uses these expressive means to the greatest effect. Verdi commented upon the nascent debate about the correct religious tone with a certain wink of the eye: »I am working on my mass, and with the greatest pleasure. It seems to me that I have become a serious person – no longer the audience’s tomfool, beating the drum and urging all and sundry to ›Walk up, walk in‹.« Now this impressive work, so adept at rousing extreme emotions, will be heard from the newly-founded Dresdner Festspielchor and an outstanding ensemble of soloists at the Kreuzkirche. The conductor is Lan Shui, one of the great Asian conductors. The audience is invited to experience Verdi’s masterwork played in all its intensity, sublimity and forcefulness, performed on historical instruments – truly »Musikfestspiele for everyone«!
