MUSICAL THEATRE PERFORMANCE

»SCHACHNOVELLE«

"When Nils Strunk throws himself into his plays, he doesn't just do so wholeheartedly, but also dives to the very bottom to bring what has been buried to the surface," writes buehne-magazin about the multi-talented actor, musician, and director, who has been a member of the Burgtheater ensemble since the 2021/22 season. And so, in this stage adaptation of Stefan Zweig's The Royal Game, conceived together with Lukas Schrenk, the magnificent mime is in top form for two hours: He declaims, dances, plays the piano, and moves the scenery back and forth. The brilliant solo and the rapid role changes are literally tailor-made for him and reveal Zweig's novella, written in 1941/42 during his Brazilian exile, about power, powerlessness, fame, and the weaknesses and strengths of the human spirit in all its gripping relevance today.
