A JOURNEY THROUGH ENGLISH MUSIC
PIETSCHMANN — DRESDEN PHILHARMONIC — MANZE

From the subtle harmonies of the Renaissance to the vibrant sounds of our time – this concert celebrates the diversity and brilliance of English music throughout the centuries and combines it with Haydn's Cello Concerto No. 2. The Dresden Philharmonic's new principal cellist, Konstanze Pietschmann, is featured as soloist. For two hundred years, the D major concerto lay in the Prague National Library. The original manuscript was only discovered in 1951, and today this virtuosic yet lyrical work is an indispensable part of concert halls worldwide. Elgar's Serenade for Strings, which opens the concert, was the composer's first hit. Right from the start, a mysterious pizzicato creates a special atmosphere, and the slow middle movement is so beloved by the English that it is still frequently played at memorial services and weddings. The English early Baroque also unfolds its magic this evening: In William Lawes' The Sunrise, the music rises like a warming morning sun. The evening concludes with Sir Arthur Bliss's Colour Symphony, in which colors become sounds: a symphonic masterpiece that artfully interweaves musical and visual impressions.
