WORLD-CLASS ORCHESTRAS UNITED
ISRAEL PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA — MUNICH PHILHARMONIC — SHANI
For an evening dedicated to peace, the Israeli conductor Lahav Shani brings together two world-class orchestras at the Kreuzkirche: the Munich Philharmonic and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert, in which members of each orchestra share a desk, reflects not only the 80-year anniversary of the end of World War II and thus the liberation from the Nazi reign of terror, but also marks the beginning of the history of reconciliation between Germany and Israel. The program weaves together lifelines from both countries through the two composers chosen. »Prayer« by Tzvi Avni, born in Saarbrücken in 1925 and emigrated to Palestine with his parents in 1935, is a deeply-felt musical supplication. The composer studied with Paul Ben-Haim, a student of Gustav Mahler’s close associate Bruno Walter. This brings us full circle to Mahler’s »Tragic Symphony«, which expresses all the emotions of a human life in music, in a way few others have.
