In 1874, the undisputed king of Italian opera, Giuseppe Verdi, composed a Requiem, astonishing the music world. His Messa da Requiem is powerful and doesn't shy away from dramatic techniques, but rather employs them with great impact. A revolution! He commented on the emerging clash between church and art with a twinkle in his eye: "I am working on my mass, and even with the greatest pleasure. It seems to me that I have become a serious person and no longer the clown of the public, banging on the drum and shouting 'Step right up, step right up!'" Now, this impressive work can be experienced in the Frauenkirche with the Dresden Festival Orchestra, the newly founded Dresden Festival Choir, and an outstanding ensemble of soloists. On the podium is Lan Shui, one of the great conductors from the Far East. The audience is invited to experience Verdi's masterpiece – performed on historical instruments – in all its density, sublimity and power.
