After Seong-Jin Cho won the Musikfestspiele audience’s hearts during the past season with his piano recital at the Palais im Großen Garten, the exceptional South Korean pianist returns to Dresden with an orchestra and one of the jewels of piano literature: Chopin’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 in E-minor. Inspired by his first love, Konstancja Gładkowska, Chopin used the entire spectrum of sonic possibilities his instrument offered, opening up all-new emotional and musical dimensions for himself and subsequent performers. A rich orchestral sound is guaranteed by the Göteborgs Symfoniker, founded in 1905 and appointed the Swedish National Orchestra in 1997. The audience may also look forward to another reunion: the conductor is the Finn Santtu-Matias Rouvali, already celebrated in Dresden in 2024, who is now the orchestra’s chief conductor. Under his baton, Tchaikovsky’s last great work, the »Pathétique«, will also be played, about which the composer himself said: »Without exaggeration, I put my entire soul in to this symphony.«
