Neumarkt
01067 Dresden

The Frauenkirche is a Lutheran Protestant church of the High Baroque. It was erected between 1726 and 1743 and is considered as one of Europe’s most attractive church buildings. The church had been destroyed during the 1945 air raids on Dresden. During the Cold War the church became a monument against war and destruction. The rebuilding started in 1994 and was financed by donations from supporting associations from all over the world. Sometimes the Frauenkirche is referred to as Protestant and East German counterpart of the Cologne Cathedral, also because both churches had an immense symbolic importance over the course of their changeable history.
