Ladies and Gentlemen,

Since its founding in 1978, the Dresden Music Festival has been an event of international renown. From the beginning, world stars came here for a chance to perform in the musical city of Dresden or to appear with the »Kapelle« or the Dresden Philharmonic. During the years of the iron curtain, the great guest appearances were legendary: Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic, Claudio Abbado and La Scala Milan, Zubin Mehta and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The fact that after 1990, the Festival has become anchored in a Europe that is opening up and growing together is proven by the many music lovers from Germany and abroad that flock to the Dresden Music Festival every May for two weeks. In more than 30 annual editions, not only has the tradition of grand opera, ballets and fireworks going back to the Saxon court been continued, but apart from orchestra and chamber music concerts, the Festival’s programs have featured early music, new music, world music and jazz – and, of course, dance. Numerous concerts are designed especially with a younger audience in mind, and innovative formats open new perspectives on concerts for the 21st century.

As »Friends of the Dresden Music Festival«, we are proud of the extraordinary programming our Festival offers. It has become a synonym for Dresden’s musical culture. However, much activity and financial support is required to keep it that way. Therefore, we invite you to join our association as Friends of the Dresden Music Festival. Help us maintain this outstanding festival of classical music and give the Dresden Music Festival new possibilities of expanding its artistic program! As recognition, you will receive advance notice of the new program, special ticket rates for selected performances, the opportunity to meet the artists backstage – and the good feeling that it is »your Festival« as well.

Yours sincerely,
Harald Baumann-Hasske
[President »Friends of Dresden Music Festival«]

One of the main goals of the Association »Friends of the Dresden Music Festival« is to support the musical development of young people:

• Outstanding young soloists and ensembles are to find an attractive podium at the Dresden Music Festival.

• Special Festival projects are to give children and teenagers easy access to so-called high culture.

• As part of the Dresden Music Festival, the Association fosters a fruitful dialogue between the city’s music education institutions and international artists.

• Through events promoting broad identification with the Festival, such as »Dresden in song & music«, it seeks to promote a broad acceptance of the Dresden Music Festival.
