It is easy to believe that Iveta Apkalna might rescue her instrument from its niche existence. In 2005, an »ECHO Classic« Award was presented for the first time to an organist, this young Latvian who also bagged the Audience Award. Apkalna calls Bach her »daily bread«, but the Silbermann organ at the Hofkirche (Royal Chapel) will not just resound with works by the Thomaskantor under her hands, but also Schumann’s »Four Sketches« Opus 58, from his time in Dresden. With Peteris Vasks and his »Te Deum«, a major composer of Apkalna’s homeland is also represented – Latvia, where the »singing revolution« of 1989 is unforgotten. Thus, it seems befitting to close the program with the Passacaglia from Shostakovich’s opera »Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District«, which was banned for years.
