»Schumann at 200«
The second concert of the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra also features Shostakovich, with his second, rather carefree piano concerto. With Kurt Masur, a personality takes the podium who is not only musically, but also politically important. The Russian work is framed by reflections on Byron’s Manfred. Schumann and Tchaikovsky were equally fascinated by this tragic figure; Schumann even noted a »sleepless night« in his diary after he read it. Tchaikovsky, in turn, admired Schumann’s »Manfred« version and had a hard time finding his own access to the subject. The result was a full-fledged symphony, a psychogram of this Faustian, tortured hero in four movements.
