The theatre of Dresden was established between 1911 and 1913. The theatre is a mixture of Neobaroque and Jugendstil. The front towards the zwinger was adapted to the zwinger architecture with its arcades and baroque decoration.

In the 1945-bombings, the auditorium was destroyed. After the war, the theatre was rebuilt and renovated. In October 2007, it regained its original exterior decoration.
