Großer Garten Park and Palais

Hauptpalais/ Am Palaisteich
01219 Dresden

In Dresden, nature and relaxation begins in the middle of the city, in the Grosser Garten Park, the largest and the most beautiful park in Dresden. The palace at its centre was not only the first example of Baroque architecture in Saxony, but also one of the first of its kind on German territory. Between approx. 1676 until 1683 it was built after the plans of Johann Georg Stacke by order of prince Johann Georg III. Italian loggias and gazebos were archetypes for its construction. It was planned only to be a building for festivities. The courtly society used the grand palais as a summer residence and as venue for prestigious festivals.

In February 1945 the Baroque building was destroyed by bombing. As a result of outward restoration the Palais opened recently as a venue again.

The open-air stage, the park theatre and the boating lake are all within easy reach of the miniature park railway. The zoo and the botanical garden are also intergrated into the park, which covers an area of some two square kilometres.
