Japanese Palais

Palaisplatz 11
01097 Dresden

Started in 1714 and enlarged in 1723-33 in late Baroque-Classicistic style, this four-winged building was originally intended to accommodate the porcelain collection of Augustus the Strong.

Built after sketches by M.D.Pöppelmann in 1715, this intent is still visible in the exotic curved roofs, the relief on the gable above the portal and the Chinese herms in the inner courtyard.

After being destroyed in World War II, it was rebuilt in 1952 and since 1957 it houses the State Prehistory Museum and the Museum of Ethnology.
