At the beginning of the 19th century, the property of the current palace was covered with vineyards and forest. In 1803, the 7th Earl Findlater, a Scottish lord, aquired it and started building a palais on top of the hill, which was one of the most beautiful of its kind in Dresden at this time. Prince Albrecht of Prussia, son of king Friedrich Wilhelm III, purchased the estate in 1850. Adolf Lohse, a student of famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, designed the palace as it is today and so it was finished between 1851-54 in Late Classicist style. Furthermore, an attractive park covering 13 hectare of land was a result of the new plans. Earl Wilhelm Graf von Hofenau was the last owner of Albrechtsberg Palace. He sold it to the city of Dresden in 1925. In October 1945 it became headquaters of the Sowjet military administration in Dresden. In 1951 the first »Pionierpalast« (the »Pioniere« were the governmental organisation, which was occupying the youth of the GDR) of the former German Democratic Republic was founded in Dresden. After only one year the city of Dresden re-owned Albrechtsberg Palace. In 1977 the office for preservation of monuments and historic buildings elevated Albrechtsberg Palace to be a cultural monument with national importance. Its great hall and salons are available for congresses and cultural events.
