Piotr Tchaikovsky: Symphony No. 6 in B-flat-Minor Op. 74 »Pathétique«
Just like Dvorák, Mendelssohn and Wagner, pianist Emanuel Ax may count himself among the honorary members of the New York Philharmonic Society. Far more than one hundred joint concerts have been witness to the extraordinary collaboration between this soloist and orchestra. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25, which they present together at Berlin’s Konzerthaus, could not be a more ideal piece for this partnership: in the solo part, Ax shows himself among the élite of his profession. However, the Piano Concerto, which resembles a symphony, also offers the members of New York’s excellent orchestra plenty of chances to shine. The program ends with a classic of orchestral literature, Tchaikovsky’s last symphony, the »Pathétique«.
Concert duration: approx. 1 hour 45 minutes (including intermission)
